What Does It Mean to Open a Tantramar Gathering of Local Politicians with a Declaration of Unceded Territory?

 

On 20 December 2022 all the newly elected town councillors and mayor were sworn in to their oaths of office with the town's staffer Donna Beal overseeing this event in Dorchester at their local public venue VCC Veterans Community Centre.  Donna Beal opened the event with the declaration that they were all gathered on "unceded territory" ... why?  The first CAO for Tantramar Jennifer Bourne also made a speech about accomplishing our goals together... moving forward with a one community mindset. Hmm..?
