Strait Shores Politics with Erica Butler - CHMA FM Mount Allison University Coverage - Andy MacGregor Councillor

New Interim President of Mount Allison University Robert MacKinnon - Report from CHMA FM Erica Butler
"This is not Robert MacKinnon’s first extended stay in Sackville. The new interim president of Mount Allison actually graduated from the university back in 1978. “We’ve been enjoying rediscovering Sackville,” says MacKinnon. The town “still has the same feel” as he recalls from his student days, although he’s noted the changes. “Mel’s is closed, of course… and the sub shop that I used to go to is no longer there… But the town is still a beautiful town.”

"MacKinnon says both the major renovation of the Ralph Pickard Bell Library, and also the upcoming negotiations for a new faculty contract are both on his radar.
As for the library project, which received a pledge of $36 million in federal and provincial funding last year, MacKinnon is anxious to find out what the committee working on the project has come up with. “I’d really like to get this project rolling so that it will be on the road to completion when the when the permanent president arrives,” says MacKinnon."
Amazing to see so much money flowing to the university... never any money for a concrete skatepark project here though.. why?

Erica Butler CHMA FM is part of the problem not part of the solution
Erica Butler's consistently bad reporting locally since 2020 is doing a lot of damage and the reality of this girl's arrival from Halifax in 2020 is that she has put a lot of toxic news stories out into our society and has already been responsible for much harm to the mental health of her listeners and readers - not only by the stories she reports - but the stories she will not report on, in other words, she is a heavily biased and disreputable "reporter" aka Propagandist for the Agenda of the progressives - no one has challenged her and no one has offered a more balanced approach and alternative view to the stories she continually puts forth in the local news arena of Tantramar.. I truly hope that this changes and I hope that more people question this woman's ethics and motivation -- listen to an appaulling interview with an out of town young queer doctor - Dr. Thomas - now doing "gender affirming care" in Tantramar at the university campus -- at this link:

Kavana Wa Kilele (1995 – 2021)
As fierce as a mountain lion and as gentle as a moth’s wings, Kavana joined the Mount Allison community in 2015. She immediately became a valued member of the student body. She played an integral part in the Sackville Refugee Response Coalition, the Black Student Union, and the MASSIE program. When she wasn’t planning her run for president of Kenya, Kavana created poetry and music that she loved sharing with anyone who would listen. Kavana is remembered for her abundant empathy, bright laughter, and warm hugs. An advocate for radical and unconditional love, she was a true force of nature.
To celebrate Kavana’s memory, a needs-based endowment to be awarded to a Black student who exemplifies the spirit of Kavana’s activism has been created in her name. To donate to the bursary, please go to www.mta.ca/donate."

We Were Here: A Portrait of New Brunswick's Black Community 1850-1960 will be on view in the West Gallery at the @unb.art.centre until March 17th.
In the words of Jennifer Dow: "This is a peek into the Black community I know... there are no labels of "first" or "prominent"... I always just knew them as "family"... this came about after years of not seeing every day Black New Brunswickers represented. ... I was seeing a lot of people from outside the community pick and choose whose history was shared.

This exhibit tells the story of the everyday lives of Black New Brunswickers and features photographs and documents from the Provincial Archives as well as from the private collection of Jennifer Dow, a Black historian, genealogist, and a founding member of REACH in New Brunswick. Jennifer is a sixth-generation descendant of early Black settlers in New Brunswick and is deeply committed to tracing the history and lineage of these settlers and ensuring that their existence in New Brunswick is not forgotten. She has worked as a consultant on developing curriculum and teaching resources for schools in New Brunswick, she has worked with the Fredericton Regional Museum to develop the exhibition Early Black History, and with the UNB Art Centre on Rediscovering the Roots of Black New Brunswickers. She is also a founding member of the New Brunswick Black Artists Alliance (NBBAA).
Jennifer Dow was a guest on BlackLantic twice during Season 1 in episodes 25 and 29, which can be found on our website!

Laura Beazley -- A CHMA FM Report - A Baie Verte Resident on Her Son's Poor Health
An area resident is raising concerns about air quality in schools, particularly Tantramar High, after her 14-year-old son caught COVID-19 and became gravely ill. But a spokesperson for the Department of Education says “no concerns have been raised” by the school district about conditions at Tantramar High."

Levee on the Lake Returns to Silver Lake This Summer : August 18 - 21, 2022

"A Sackville festival has been honoured with an East Coast Music Award for the second consecutive year.
On May 8, Levee on the Lake was named Event of the Year at the awards event in Fredericton.
The festival is happening in Sackville again this summer from August 18 to 21.
It began in 2020, after the COVID-19 crisis wiped out the live music scene.
For that event, music lovers were physically-distanced in boats, with a paddle-up stage at Silver Lake. Last year, the festival moved onto dry land at Lillas Fawcett Park.
