Review Your Property Designation
Halton Region is once again undergoing a Regional Official Plan Review, and once again, it could be farmers and rural residents that end up in a prolonged battle of land use designation, similar to ROPA 38. Halton Region Federation of Agriculture (HRFA) wants to avoid that from happening and is appealing to you, our rural constituents, to ensure that the mapping accurately reflects the realities for both today – and into the future. A change in designation will dramatically impact your abilities to farm, further confounding you as planners arbitrarily restrict our abilities to operate under normal farm business practices, including the placement of farm buildings.
As farmers and rural property owners, we are beseeching you to review your property and its designations now, before this continues too far. The deadline to comment is October 30, 2020.
To review your property and the designations in place and currently under review please go to:
https://www.halton.ca/…/Halton-s-Regional-Official-Plan-Rev…
Scroll halfway down the page until you see a blue bar on the right-hand side of the page. It is entitled “Launch ROPR Mapping Viewer”. You then need to accept the terms and conditions once this is done type in your address and it will bring up a map of your property and the designations both current and new.
If you are unclear how to work within the framework provided on the screen, HRFA can provide you with some assistance in this matter. For those that have been able to ascertain the status of your property, and it has undergone a change in designation, it is imperative that you contact Halton Region’s Planning Department – and your local Regional Councillor – to determine why such a move was rendered and what options are required moving forward for your property. Once designated, it may be virtually impossible to reverse that since there is presently no appeal process that has been outlined or provided to date.
HRFA continues to work on your behalf towards the best possible outcome for agriculture, we appreciate having real examples of challenges posed by changing designations. If you have any examples, questions or concerns that may help in our efforts to have agricultural land designated and natural heritage as an overlay, please connect with us at hrfa@outlook.com.
Please note that the revised designations are based on information received through arial photography and mistakes can easily be made on features such as wetlands, grouping of trees and woodlots.
