I do wonder why representatives of our Town have never mentioned the fact that the main town water trunk lines do indeed run right by this new ‘Industrial Park’. The main valves are located towards the bottom of the Park and are situated on RESERVOIR ROAD’s bottom section. They are marked VALVE BOX and are very visible off to the side of the Trans Canada Highway. It would seem so logical to run a large diameter branch line up towards Exit 500 and totally branch service the full Industrial Park with town treated water, and of course fire hydrants wherever needed. It would also open up the availability of plenty of new residential construction on the hillside. It is long past time to get Economic Development ‘in gear’ I would think. One cannot ride along on the shirttails of Mount Allison forever."

"The disturbing thing about the dumping is that when I went to see Manager Lori Bickford at the Tantramar Regional Service Commission to ask permission to dump the 50,000 cubic metres of soil on my property across Crescent Street from the Terra Beata facility, I was told that it was impossible because it was zoned wetland and there was no way they could allow any material to be deposited there.

Well the site is in the Sackville Industrial Park and runs all the way down to include the dyke system by our old Town Dump. It is within 800 metres of the project excavation site.. The base there is the same material composition as that which is being excavated from the St James Street area. The contractor that I was trying to help by supplying a dumping site is a LOCAL COMPANY. They wanted to keep their tendered price down as low as possible, which they could do by having a very short and practical route and as a result they were hoping to be the successful bidder and employ Sackville based trucks, equipment, and their drivers throughout the winter.

The Crescent Street proposed site is now an unused and non productive marsh area. The 5000 tandem dump truck loads of fill would allow much of this 35 acre low lot to be brought up to the elevation of the surrounding properties, like the firewood splitting business next door, and would enable it to be used in the future as a productive area of our Industrial Park. The proposal was to cap the site with shale to enable the parking of tractor trailers.

I cannot understand if any logic was used to take the material all the way down towards Frosty Hollow and then dump it in a residential/farming area just off Rte 106. Does anyone have any answers?"

So strange that Councillor Evans stated on September 8, 2020, at the Special Council Meeting, that “I want the record to show that Sackville is open for business.” Now here he is, barely a month later, flip flopping on being open for business.

If Exit 506 is to be attractive to additional retail development, then one must not throw barriers up in front of them. Most highway exit food businesses include the convenience of being able to utilize a drive-thru pick-up as long as there is room for them to do so and Exit 506 provides this. Drive-thrus are an integral part of most exit based restaurants today.

Councillor Evans does not seem to realize that this is not about a drive-thru in the downtown area, but is about attracting an additional business just off the TCH for the convenience of the motoring public and to create many more jobs for Sackvillians as well as the Mount Allison students. This is about alleviating some of the congestion at the ill conceived Exit 504. It is about increasing our commercial tax base to help take the load off the residential rate. The future with electric cars will see ZERO emissions if one has to wait in line for a bit. The disabled need to be given equal opportunities when it comes to accessing food and drink. A parent with children in a car needs to be able to utilize a drive-thru instead of unbuckling the kids to accompany them to stand in line inside instead of proceeding with their vehicle outside. Snowstorms and rain events makes a drive-thru the sensible way to go.

I am afraid that the large cleared lot across from the Ultramar will remain vacant for one very long time unless the Town lightens up on developers. Parsons Investments were already put ‘thru-the-ringer’ just by trying to build their Ambulance building. They stated to me that there was no place in ALL of Nova Scotia that was as difficult and demanding as the Town of Sackville is. This has to change. Sackville must become OPEN FOR BUSINESS especially as it relates to attracting a higher percentage of the approximately 12,000 vehicles that pass by our front doors on average each day.

This Code of Conduct was seemingly written to dictate the way our Councillors handle themselves, not only in their councillor duties, but as private citizens. It was loosely based on what Moncton has done.

Why in the world would there not be a consistent code of conduct that would at least be Province wide, and preferably Canada wide. For example, do we use our own House Building Code here in Town? No, of course not. It is like Sackville management tried to rewrite the Holy Bible based on the wants and wishes of some of the individuals, and in particular the upper management of ‘our’ Town. It is a great, but very scary, control feature for those at the top.

This erosion of the ability of our Town Council members to speak out on behalf of the citizens has got to stop! It seems there is less and less incentive for anyone to throw their name into the hat for a Town Council position come next election. No one likes to be muzzled especially when it comes to representing the best interests of our town citizens.

And BTW, does any citizen have any idea what Mayor John Higham is talking about when he says that Councillor Phinney violated the Code of Conduct by releasing to the public information that he was not supposed to? Is this just a ploy to somehow silence the councillor who always speaks up on behalf of the citizens? Hang in there Bruce, we have your back!

"Hopefully the Councillors are well aware that now, with the completion of the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure project to replace the old small wooden aboiteaux located at the Carter’s Brook causeway to Westcock with the three massive six ft diameter concrete and steel aboiteaux, the chances of major Lorne Street fresh water flooding are extremely small.

The watershed area that feeds Carters Brook is almost 50 times that of what the Town’s separate watershed area is that directly drains towards Lorne Street. Simply put, proper maintenance of our previous drainage system and a replacement of existing undersized aboiteaux would have rectified the flooding problem.

If only (our) DTI would commit to their responsibility and follow the Hilcon Report suggestions then we would not have to worry about flooding. It is THEIR dyking aboiteau system and what is needed is a good working relationship with our town management to get undersized and deteriorated aboiteau replaced.

Twice every day, at low tide, any flood waters have the opportunity to fully drain to the Tantramar River if only given the opportunity. There is no need of a diesel powered 6″ pump if only the aboiteau was properly sized. There is no need for holding ponds either if the Town ditches are wide and deep enough to accommodate the accumulation of storm water over these less than 6 hour periods of high tide.

Unbelievably the existing old wooden aboiteau out behind the Public Works Department, that the Town will continue to rely on (as well as the undersized pump), is an extremely small 18 inches square and it is eight feet higher in elevation than it should be for proper drainage ditch slope."
