For a quarter century, MADD Canada’s red ribbon has been a simple, yet powerful, symbol of the fight against impaired driving.
Over the next two months, thousands of volunteers and our corporate sponsors will distribute millions of these red ribbons.
We’ll be asking Canadians to tie them on their cars, key chains, purses, briefcases and backpacks. We want to see them everywhere, as a reminder to people about the dangers of impaired driving.
We do this during the holiday season because it’s the busiest time of year on most social calendars. Holiday gatherings and toasts to good cheer are common, and the risk of impaired driving is high.
The red ribbon reminds Canadians that they have the power to prevent impaired driving.
Wearing this red ribbon is a symbol of one’s commitment to always drive sober. It sends a clear message to everyone that it is NEVER OKAY to drive impaired by alcohol or other drugs.
We long for the day when that message won’t be needed anymore. Unfortunately, we’re not there yet.
Every year, between 1,250 and 1,500 people are killed and more than 63,000 are injured in impairment-related crashes. These are senseless, needless deaths and injuries that are totally preventable.
Our red ribbon is also a tribute to all of those Canadians who have been killed or injured in impaired driving crashes, and their loved ones who are also affected.
There needs to be constant and committed effort made to change people’s attitudes and habits around driving impaired. We know that education and public awareness is very important and campaigns such as Project Red Ribbon can go a long way to ensure that our voices are heard.
Everyone in Canada has the power to stop this senseless and needless crime. Everyone must take action against impaired driving if we are to ensure the safety of ourselves and our loved ones.
Encourage those around you to plan ahead if they’re going to be drinking. Take a cab, take public transit, arrange a designated driver, or plan to stay over. There are always options. And remember…if you see an impaired driver, don’t hesitate, call 911 and report that driver. The call You may just save a life!
Finally, I encourage everyone to get their red ribbons and wear them proudly. You can get them through the MADD Canada web site, or by contacting us!
Wear the red ribbon proudly as a symbol of your commitment to always drive sober. With all of us working together, we can make our roads and our communities safe from impaired driving this holiday season.
