CLIMATE CHANGE ALARMISM Hello Beausejour PPC Association Members and Friends! We’ve received news that the candidates debate on Climate Change and The Environment at Mount Allison University in Sackville, NB, on October 3rd, has been cancelled due to a lack of participants. However, the debate organizers at MAU asked that Nancy Mercier send them her answers on the subject. As such, the candidate of the Green Party of Beausejour, Laura Reinsborough, has called for an emergency debate on the impacts of climate change in a press releaseyesterday to discuss what candidates and parties are proposing they'll do in order to avoid catastrophic disasters along our coastline. We are also organizing several “Town Hall” rally's with Nancy that will be held all over Beausejour, and she has accepted three invitations to participate in debates with other candidates, one of which will be televised by Rogers TV. Finally, with some mix-ups out of our control, we have just received our lawn and road side signs this morning and will be putting them up into the late night! For those of you who signed up to get a sign, Nancy will personally be delivering them over the next few days. Thank you for your donations used to cover the $3500 cost for these signs. National Citizens Alliance of Canada (NCA) is pleased to announce that its founder and leader Stephen J Garvey has been nominated to run in the Cumberland-Colchester federal riding in the 2019 federal election.

Stephen Garvey brings strong leadership to the Cumberland-Colchester riding. Stephen has a BA in Political Science from the University of British Columbia, and MA in Environment and Development from the University of Cambridge (UK). Stephen is a former Canadian national team rower, and author in political theory. In addition, Stephen is former executive director of the Foundation for Democratic Advancement, in which for twenty years he helped bring about electoral reform. Furthermore, Stephen has experience in the federal public service, small business sector, and he has in-depth knowledge of federal issues facing the Canadian people.

Stephen and the NCA are running on a platform of Canadians First that includes a return to the true Bank of Canada, a reduction in federal taxation, projected 3x increase in CPP, and significant reduction in immigration for economic reasons.

Press Release Maxime Bernier - Leader of People's Party of Canada

Gatineau, QC,  August 12, 2019 — The leader of the People's Party of Canada, Maxime Bernier, is very disappointed with the preliminary decision of the Leaders’ Debates Commission not to invite him to the two debates that will take place during the election campaign.

Mr. Bernier disagrees with the interpretation of Commissioner David Johnston, who explains in a letter received today that he does not believe that the PPC has, under criterion (iii)b), a legitimate chance of electing more than a candidate “based on the recent political context, public opinion polls and previous general elections results.”

In a letter sent to the Commission on July 22, the PPC leader argued that, on the contrary, the recent political context in Canada and other Western democracies suggests that a populist party, even though it was founded only very recently, had an excellent chance of rapid growth and electing candidates.

“The Commission seems to have relied solely on polls, and did not consider the recent political context,” Bernier said. “The PPC represents a unique perspective, and is the only party that offers distinct policy positions on several topics that are at the heart of political debates, including immigration, climate change, freedom of expression, corporate welfare, foreign aid, supply management, and many other topics. The PPC's positions are similar to those of a large minority, or even a majority of Canadians, on these issues. Canadians have the right to hear views that differ from those of established parties.”

The PPC will continue to make representations to the Commission in the coming weeks until it makes a final decision.

Senate committee recommends significant changes to Official Languages Act

Ottawa – The federal government must centralize the application of the Official Languages Act by designating the Treasury Board as the agency responsible for its coordination and clarifying some of the principles and duties outlined in the act as part of a long-overdue modernization of this important piece of legislation, the Standing Senate Committee on Official Languages has said.

In a report released Thursday, the committee recommends the Treasury Board be tasked to adopt a government plan for official languages, supported by an Official Languages Secretariat. The committee recommends transferring the duty for coordinating Part VII of the act to the Treasury Board from now on.

The committee also recommends creating a tribunal to decide proceedings brought under the act and to issue penalties and grant remedies, thereby freeing the Commissioner of Official Languages from a policing role. The modernized act will put more emphasis on the Commissioner’s ombudsman role, giving him or her tools to intervene with federal institutions in a proactive and targeted manner, in the committee’s view.  

These are among 20 recommendations included in the committee’s latest report, which concludes a two-year study on the modernization of the act.

The core problem raised during the study was the weakness of the act’s application and inconsistent compliance among federal institutions. The recommendations prioritize areas of consensus among the more than 300 witnesses who met with the committee and the 72 briefs and follow-ups that were received over the last two years. They are aimed at providing clarity of roles and responsibilities in order to promote the substantive equality of Canada’s both official languages.

The committee also recommends requiring that all Supreme Court judges be able to read and understand both official languages, without the assistance of translation or interpretation services, at the time of their appointment. In addition, the act and its regulations must be reviewed every 10 years, to prevent future modernization of the act depending on political will.
