"The pandemic hit our Scout groups hard and we went from having 1,102 youth in more than 30 Scouting groups at the start of 2019 to having 610 youth in 2021. 2024 has seen a year of huge growth as our Scout programming continues to grow and flourish. We now have over 900 youth in the program spread across 23 groups in Fredericton, Moncton, Saint John, St. Andrews, Sussex, and Sackville with plans to expand in 2024/2025. "
Dorchester's Girl Guides memories from the 1980s and 1990s

The renewed interest in Scouts in Dorchester - and the talk of the Sackville Bowling alley - motivated me to pull out old photo albums of Guiding in Dorchester in late 1980's and early 1990's. Guiding and Scouts were an important part of Dorchester's culture until recent years. Best wishes to the parents and leaders who are supporting the current groups.
(PS - I attempted to identify the people in these photos but know that I missed quite a few. Please correct me if you can)
There are comments on each of the photos. A huge thank you to the mothers and women of the community who stepped up to take a role during those busy years. I apologize for those who will be left out of these photos. And for the number of photos displayed here. Too precious to be stored in a box in a closet.
Each June the groups would spend a weekend at Camp Wegwamageek near Baie Verte. Highlights of those years included the two week long International Guiding camps (1500 participants) held on Franklin Farms in Bains Corner near St Martins, hosted by Mitchell Franklin who later was a leader in creating the Fundy Trail Parkway. Celebrate 100 in 1989 and Under the Big Top in 1991. The local leaders were able to take a group from Sackville and Dorchester to participate. They even survived a extreme Bay of Fundy wind/rain and electrical storm that flattened tents and required evacuation to St Martins where the community welcomed them and sheltered them in their churches, community hall and fire station.
During their years with Girl Guides, the groups took on service projects, hikes, sleepovers, out reach to seniors. Sadly many of these young ladies are no longer a part of our community but used the wings/foundation they gained here in Dorchester to move across the country, and even the world. However, lasting memories were made. (Credit to the The Sackville Tribune who reported regularly on our activities.) The Guides were even included in an photo and article by Brian Townsend in the Canadian Geographic December 1991 Issue when they participated in a beach clean up."
Perhaps there is something posted about this announcement at their online"private group" Josh Goguen called "Tantramar Community Chatter".. but I have yet to find a public published online announcement ... was also confirmed by Parks & Rec Matt Pryde at that recent meeting at Town Hall in late October on Youtube... there's nothing at Matt Pryde's facebook page for Parks & Rec here:
