"Many people interested in homesteading, don't realize how little space you actually need to do all the things! It's true that we live on 40 acres, but we really only use about 2.75 acres. If my topography wasn't so steep because of our mountain ridge location and rocky soil, we could probably fit all of these things into 1 acre or less. What we fit on these 2.75 acre is this: 3000 square foot 2 story home with 2000 SF of covered deck area 3 greenhouses, 1 fully heated, 2500 SF total 2000 SF of shop space in one garage and a steal quonset hut 2 ponds 1/3 acre park green space 1 wood fire sauna 800 SF guest house / cabin 2000 SF chicken run 20 kW / 48 solar panels on 3 racks turn around driveway quarter acre of vegetable gardens quarter acre of food forest Boiler / Generator shack space to move around One big thing we don't do much of on our property is animals. We have layer hens and I sometimes do chickens and turkeys for meat birds, but not this year. We don't have room for cows or other grazing animals. For that, we would definitely need to add a couple acres at least depending on what you wanted. The point of this message is to convey that you can actually do a lot with very little. Most people don't need 3 greenhouses. Also keep in mind, in a warm climate, you would need a lot less of these things as well."
