"Opinion: No future in fossil fuels, Trudeau should act now to protect workers

Dear editor,
In response to US President Biden’s decision to cancel the Keystone XL pipeline, economist Jim Stanford made an interesting statement. Stanford said: “it is now undeniable: fossil fuels will disappear from most uses in the foreseeable future. And fossil-fuel industries will never again be an engine of economic growth and job creation in Canada.”
This is something that the climate movement and Indigenous land defenders in Canada have been saying for a very long time but, now, we’re hearing it from economists too.
For some reason, however, the message still hasn’t reached Prime Minister Trudeau and politicians like Jason Kenney who remain convinced that there is a pathway toward building this project.
Instead of trying to save this doomed pipeline, maybe Canadian politicians should get to work in service of the workers they claim to support. In the 2019 election, Trudeau promised to deliver a Just Transition Act that would support workers through the transition to a green energy economy with new jobs and retraining programs. It feels like this would be a good time to follow through on that promise.

Taxation is theft. Imagine a King who does away with taxation because it is illegal? Imagine that.
The Auditor General of NB has stated there is over 2 billion– I repeat 2 billion dollars of uncollected debts from NB residents outlined in Chapter 5, Accounts Receivable section of the AG’s Reports for 2018 and 2019.
All four political parties are aware of the outstanding funds owed to the province by delinquent taxpayers, non payment of loans and other sources. I have documentation of that awareness and yet none of them wish to act upon any serious or meaningful type of collecting process. It is also stated in the AG’s Reports that it costs the government approximately $85,000,000 per year to finance those delinquent accounts.
If just 1/2 of those debts were collected there would be tremendous improvement in the Provincial financial situation in it’s over deficit.
Why do all the political parties remain so silent and inactive when it comes to collecting what is owed by our hundred residents, companies and organizations to the NB Finance Department?

The first step of all Municipalities and the media should be to contact their local MLAs and get their position on why so many NB taxpayers, organizations and businesses are permitted to maintain delinquent accounts with the Department of Finance, some for years, as per the Auditor General of NB. Some of those accounts have been held in arears for so long they get classified as uncollectible every year, A recent article was released in the media stating the amount which was written off in 2020.
The MLAs should also be asked why should those with delinquent accounts for years are permitted to receive the same services as those who keep their accounts paid in full or who have made arrangement to pay their accounts with the Finance Department.
For an example of how long the two main political parties have permitted NB Taxpayers to maintain outstanding or delinquent accounts with the Department of Fiance go to: New Brunswick Auditor General’s Report 2013, Vol. II, Chapter 5: Accounts Receivable, sec. 5.3, p.181)."

I am retired and operate 2 small business in in the Village of Dorchester: one freelance writer/photographer as well as Plastics Recycling Company call Eco-Container. one of the largest recycler of plastic containers from i liter to 1000 liters. The Eco-Container Co. repurposes plastic and wood to create particle item such as Backyard raised Planters, rainwater collection systems and other small items.
I have been volunteer in both Dorchester nd Sackville over the past 35 years and have also participated in political activities. As a writer I have researched issues and published review articles by a number of publications over the years some included images related to the issues being addressed.
As a main past time I collect books by Maritime Authors and some Canadian Authors.
